League: Arva got their Division 3 League campaign off to a great start on Sunday last in St Aidan’s Park, Bawnboy where they accounted for Templeport by 4 point’s on a score of 1-10 to 1-6. Arva started well and led by 0-6 to 0-2 at the interval and were leading by 9 points midway through the second half 1-9 to 0-3 – the goal coming from Gavin Doyle following a great upfield move. The home side finished strongly with a goal and 3 points but it wasn’t enough and the visitors took home the points. On Sunday next Arva will play Bailieboro in Michael Cully Park and this should be a much harder game with the visitors relegated from Division 2 last year. The last time Bailieboro played in Arva was in the late ‘80’s when both teams were going well in Division 1. Nuala O’ Rourke: The area was saddened by the death which occurred on 1st February of Mrs Nuala O’ Rourke, Drumnawall, Arva following a long illness. A native of Donagh, Lisnaskea Nuala came to Arva following her marriage to John on 27th January 1970 and she soon became a very popular member of the community. She was of a quiet but very friendly disposition and this endeared her to her many friends. Nuala was a brilliant musician and taught the Piano in her home to many students over a long number of years. Indeed in the early years she taught in at least 2 schools in Cavan town but decided to concentrate on those from over a wide area who called to her home. She was the Organist for the old choir in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva for over 20 years. In her spare time she began to experiment with writing short stories and had some of these published in a number of Magazines. Nuala got involved with the Longford Women’s Link through which she took a number of courses in University College Dublin and ironically she was due to be presented with her Certificate next month. She was very fond of animals of all kind kinds and had a great love of nature. She was involved with Birdwatch Ireland and often went out to meet with this group in the early morning hours. Another of her favourite pastimes was Bingo – especially in Arva where she helped out for many years. Nuala and her family suffered a big upset in their lives with the death of her daughter Sinead which occurred in April 2004. She was also predeceased by her brother Aidan in Donagh and is survived by her husband John (Don), son Michael, daughter Deirdre, grand daughter Melissa, brothers Dermot in Donagh, Noel in Monaghan and her sister Sr Majella Mc Carren in Claremorris, Co Mayo nephews, nieces and a wide circle of friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. Her remains were removed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and following Requiem Mass burial took place in Coronea Cemetery. Rev Eamonn Bredin C.C. officiated while Rev Colm Hurley, Killeshandra was also present.
