Arva Local Notes - 12th March

St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club: : The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night 5^th March where there here was no Jackpot winner – full details next week. The Jackpot on Monday last 12^th March was €3,050 - Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. Challenge: Arva travelled to Newtowncashel on Friday night last to play the local side in a challenge match and while both sides were short a number of players they had a very useful game.

Church of Ireland Services for the Arva Group of Parishes: Morning Prayer Service in Carrigallen and Columbkille at 10.00 am and in Arva and Gowna at 11.30 am. On Sunday last a Dedication Service took place in Gowna Parish Church where Bishop Ken Clarke dedicated the new central heating system, new carpets, restoration of pews and woodwork. There was a great attendance and a reception in the Community centre.

Visitation’s: Parishioners are asked to note that if anyone has a family member in Hospital who would like a Pastoral visit from their local clergy please contact them with Ward details etc. Due to data protection legislation hospitals are not now allowed to give Patient lists to Clergy – so they have no way of knowing if a Parishioner is in hospital.

Eucharistic Adoration in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva following the 7 o’clock Mass on Monday evenings.

Lourdes: The annual Kilmore Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes led by Bishop Leo O’ Reilly will take place as usual from 27th May to 1st June. Cake Sale: St Mary’s National School, Arva are holding a Cake Sale in St Patrick’s Hal, Arva on St Patrick’s Day directly after the 10.00 am Mass. All proceeds will go towards assisting school activities and your generous support would be greatly appreciated.

Line Dancing: continues on Thursday nights in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex with Classes for Beginners at 8.30 pm and for the more advanced at 9.30 pm. There is a great attendance and everyone is welcome to attend - so come along and enjoy the fun.

Arva Agricultural Show Society will hold a meeting in the Resource Centre, Market Square, Arva at 9.30 pm on Thursday of next week 22^nd March. All members are requested to attend and new members always welcome

Table Quiz: On this Friday night last St Josephs (Arva / Killeshandra) Football Club held a very successful Table Quiz in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex. There was great support and an enjoyable night was had by all. The committee wish to thank those who provided the Prizes for the Raffle and also Eamonn and Philomena Gray for the use of their premises and the half time refreshments.

Arva Ladies G.A.A. Underage Training will be held in St Patrick’s Hall every Saturday at 11.00 am – new members always welcome. The club would sincerely request parents to stay at the training venue in case help is needed.

Church of Ireland Services for the Arva Group of Parishes: Sunday 11^th March – Dedication service in Gowna Church at 3.30pm. This is the only service in the group on this Sunday. Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland – St. Mary’s National School, Arva On Sunday 26^th February 2012, the school choir from St. Mary’s N.S., Arva performed with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland in the National Convention Centre in Dublin. This was a unique occasion for these young people to have the opportunity to join choirs from all over Ireland under the baton of the maestro Gearóid Grant. The choir was joined by their parents, teachers and friends in the Convention Centre and afterwards they enjoyed refreshments in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex courtesy of the Board of Management and the Parents’ Association. The children were prepared for the performance by Mr. Mulvey and Ms. Mallon. It was a very special and memorable day for all involved and it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the wonderful talent of the pupils of St. Marys.

Confirmation: On Sunday last 4th March Bishop Leo O’Reilly conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on the children of the parish in St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra. It was a beautiful day and all the children looked really well on their big day. There were 15 children from Arva and 2 from Coronea as follows - St Mary’s National School, Arva - Courtney Corcoran, Lauren Donnelly, Lolita Farnham, Aoife Finnegan, Shauna Finnegan, Lauren Greene, Melissa Hetherton, Megan Reilly, Dillon Mc Entee, Evan O’ Connor, Alison O’ Connor, Robert Lynch, Ernestas Prajaras, Siobhán Scott, Sinéad O’ Reilly. Coronea National School: Amy O’ Reilly, Patrick Martin.

We congratulate them all and their Parents and Teachers for getting them prepared for this important Sacrament.

Cluster Meeting: On Thursday night last 1st March a meeting of the 4 Parish’s in the Cluster Group – Killeshandra, Carrigallen, Ballinamore and Corlough – was held in Drumreilly Parish Hall. Bishop Leo O’Reilly and the Diocesan Pastoral Team (including Child Safeguarding and Youth) were in attendance to meet the Parishioners as well as the Pastoral Councils, Finance Committee’s and Church Organisations. The Announcing of the Gospel, the future shape of the Church, the key role of Clusters, local issues, etc, etc were up for discussion and there were many comments from those present. Tea was served by the ladies when the meeting concluded.

Congratulations are extended to the popular M.s Brenda Quinn who is a member of staff in Fosters Pharmacy, Main Street, Arva who celebrated a significant birthday recently with a big party. We believe there were Tulips in abundance and a great night’s craic.

Methodist Church: Many local people will remember a former Minister with the Methodist Church who lived in the Manse on the Carrigallen Road – Rev Ian Henderson. On Sunday next 26th February Rev Henderson will visit Corlisbratten Methodist Church for an Evening Service at 8.00 pm as President of the Methodist Church in Ireland. Rev Ian, his wife Ros and daughter Andrea lived in Arva for a number of years and were very much part of the community - playing an active role in many local organisations. There is a general invitation to everyone in the community to attend the Service and the Henderson family look forward to renewing many old friendships.

League: Arva got their Division 3 League campaign off to a great start on Sunday last in St Aidan’s Park, Bawnboy where they accounted for Templeport by 4 point’s on a score of 1-10 to 1-6. Arva started well and led by 0-6 to 0-2 at the interval and were leading by 9 points midway through the second half 1-9 to 0-3 – the goal coming from Gavin Doyle following a great upfield move. The home side finished strongly with a goal and 3 points but it wasn’t enough and the visitors took home the points. On Sunday next Arva will play Bailieboro in Michael Cully Park and this should be a much harder game with the visitors relegated from Division 2 last year. The last time Bailieboro played in Arva was in the late ‘80’s when both teams were going well in Division 1. The game is due to throw in at 2.00 pm and we appeal to all supporters to come out and support the team.

Meeting: The Arva Club will hold their first meeting for 2012 on this Friday night 17^th February at 9.30 pm in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex. All members are requested to attend punctually.

League: Arva are due to start their Division 3 League campaign this weekend with an away game against Templeport in St Aidan’s Park, Bawnboy. The game is fixed for Sunday afternoon – check club website or Twitter for time.

St Joseph’s: The Annual General Meeting of St Joseph’s GAA club was held in the Clubrooms Killeshandra on Wednesday night last 8^th February with a good attendance from both the Arva and Killeshandra clubs. A review of the past year took place and the following officers were elected for 2012 – Chairman Cyril Sheridan, Vice Chairman Sheamie Reilly, Secretary Donough Reilly, Assistant Secretary John Hamilton, Joint Treasurers Tom Mc Kiernan and Michael Ellis. The club thanked Jim Giblin who acted as Referee at a number of challenge games during the year and who always made himself available when needed.

St Josephs played Castlerahan in Round 1 of the Minor League on Sunday last in Packie Devlin Park, Killeshandra with the scores level at the final whistle 2-10 each. They are due to play Ramor United on Saturday next 18^th February at 3.00 pm in the Virginia venue.

Hurling: St Feilim’s U14 hurlers qualified for the U14 championship final when they beat Woodford Gaels by 5-04 to 1-02 in Kingspan Breffni Park 3G Pitch on Saturday last. They play Cootehill in the final at 12.45 pm on this Saturday 18^th February. As well as the honour of winning the championship, the winners will also go on to represent Cavan at the Féile Na nGael in Dublin on 5^th/ 6^th/ 7^th July. We congratulate them on reaching the final and wish them continued success.

The Cavan Senior team played near neighbours Longford on Saturday night last in Kingspan Breffni Park but after a poor second half showing from the home side the visitors came out on top with 3 points to spare. However Cavan are a young team and need time to get up to the standard of senior inter county fare and hopefully supporters will not be too critical. Their next outing will be back in Breffni on Saturday 3^rd March against Sligo.

The Cavan Senior team made the long trek to Wexford Park on Sunday last for the opening game in the Allianz Football League – Division 3. Unfortunately they conceded 4 goals and were defeated by 5 points. This is a young Cavan team but it’s plain to see that they have a great rapport and are playing for each other. While it might take a year or two for them to mature everyone should support them and try not to be critical. They have a great work ethic and hopefully will do well in the league. Keep it going lads. There should be a big attendance in Kingspan Breffni Park this Saturday evening when they take on neighbours Longford at 7.00 pm in the second round. After the visitors great victory in the Championship last year they will be confident of repeating the result again.

Congratulations to the Cavan U-21 team who retained the Hastings Cup on Saturday last when they defeated Longford after extra time in Abbeylara. Today Wednesday 1^st February is the Feast of St Brigid who was born c 454 and was renowned for her hospitality, almsgiving and care of the sick. The ancient tradition of making St Brigid’s Crosses from Rushes is still carried out each year and hung in homes in her honour – Mass in Arva at 9.30 am. Tomorrow Thursday 2^nd February is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord also known as Candelmas Day. Mass will be celebrated at 9.30 am in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva where candles will be Blessed for both Church and Home use. Anyone wishing to have Candles Blessed should leave them on the table in front of the Altar. Candles for Church use will be most welcome. This Friday is the First Friday and is the Feast of St Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. The ancient custom of Blessing of Throats will take place at 10.00 am Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva. Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Coronea on Friday evening with Blessing of Candles and Throats. The Sick and Housebound will be visited at the usual times on Friday. The beautiful practice of taking Holy Communion from the Parish Mass to family members or other parishioners unable to attend is strongly encouraged. This Sacred custom goes back to the very earliest days of the Church. Would anyone have a Pyx at home that they no longer need?? Contact any Priest.

Arva Local Notes - 23rd January

St Patrick’s Arva Football Club: The Annual General Meeting took place on Saturday evening last in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex. There was a god turnout of members and players and the past years activities were discussed. The election of Officers resulted as follows – Chairman Barney Cully, Vice Chairman John Hamilton, Joint Treasurers Cyril Sheridan and Michael Ellis, P.R.O. Brían Cully, Children’s Officer Arthur Mc Cabe, Hurling Officer Niall Gormley, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Officer Willie Ward, Coaching Officer John Hamilton, Insurance Officer Patrick Mulligan, Cultural and Irish Officer Padraig Brady, Scór Officer John Gormley, Park Committee Chairman John Hamilton. The positions of Secretary and Assistant Secretary plus a number of committee’s will be elected at the first committee meeting.

Thanks: We say a sincere thanks to Niall Gormley who produced a newsletter for the GAA AGM with all the relevant information on what is happening on the Hurling front in this area. Arva is joined with Cornafean, Lacken and Ballinagh to form St Felim’s Hurling Club and over the past couple of years they have won the Ulster Féile ns nGeal competition and represented Cavan and Ulster in the All Ireland Finals which were held in Ennis, Co Clare and Galway. Niall had great praise for the new Cavan Hurling Development Officer Eoin Morrissey from Waterford who is doing Trojan work in getting hurling on a sound footing within the county. Last year Ryan Magarahan and Rory Mulligan won Ulster Féile medals with the U-14 team while Danny Conneely and Enda Gormley have been regulars on the U-16 team. Niall would like to get more people involved and will be organising training on Saturday mornings – full details later.

: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night last where there here was no Jackpot winner - numbers drawn were 1 - 3 – 8 – 30 and the following received a €50 consolation prize – Lana and Luke Fox, Longford Street, Arva. Wolfgang Welch, Drumalt, Arva. Shane Dobson, Cormore, Arva. The Jackpot on Monday last 23^rd January was €2,700. Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. Thanks to everyone for supporting the G.A.A. Lotto.

Gear: There is a limited amount of GAA Club Gear for sale in Arva Post Office – call in and check it out.

Church of Ireland Services for the Arva Group of Parishes: Sunday 29^th January – GFS United service Arva 11.00 am. No other services on this Sunday.

Corlisbratten Methodist Church will hold a Special Evening Praise Service at 8.00 pm on this Sunday 29^th January. Tea will be served afterwards and everyone is welcome to attend.
