Div 3 Arva 2-10 Templeport 1-4
Arva finished off their domestic competitions for the year on Saturday evening last with a comprehensive Division 3 victory over Templeport in Michael Cully Park. Arva finished in 5th place on the League table with some games lost by small margins but hopefully things will work better next year. Padraig Mulligan is staying on as Team Manager and with such a young and talented team it is hoped that success is not too far away.
Arva opened the scoring in the first minute when James Morris took a great pass from Bryan Mc Entee and sent over the bar. Peter Morris added a point from a free a minute later and Gavin Doyle fisted another point in the 5th minute. Ciaran Brady had the score of the game in the 6th minute after a great move down the field and sent a cracker to the net to leave Arva an front 1-3 to no score. Templeport opened their account in the 15th minute with a free and added another point a minute later but back came the home side with 2 points from peter Morris in the 20th and 22nd minutes. The visitors replied 2 minutes later and as the clock ticked down Arva were leading 1-5 to 0-3. Then the unthinkable happened and due to a mistake in the defence the visitors got a goal to leave Arva ahead at the break by just 2 points.
Templeport had the first score of the second half after 4 minutes and this turned out to be their last score of the game. Arva were desperately unlucky not to get a goal 3 minutes later when Peter Conneely’s rasping shot came back off the crossbar. The ball wasn’t cleared and Arva were awarded a free which Morris converted. Morris pointed again in the 10th minute following good work by Ciaran Cooney and Gavin Doyle and Doyle himself sent a great shot to the net in the 13th minute. Morris had point’s in the 15th, 23rd and 30th minutes to leave Arva worthy winners on a score Arva 2-10 Templeport 1-4.

Div 3 Mountnugent 1-12 Arva 0-11
Arva played Mountnugent in the Division 3 League Saturday evening last in Michael Cully Park. The result had no significance for Arva but the visitors needed to win in their quest for promotion. It was a ding dong battle from start to finish and had the home side not missed at least 3 goal chances then the result could have been different. In the end Mountnugent won by 4 points on a score Mountnugent 1-12 Arva 0-11. The visitors opened the scoring with a pointed free by Ciaran Caffrey in the 1st minute while David Givney and Ciaran Brady exchanged points within the next minute and Givney pointed a free a minute later. Peter Morris pointed frees in the 5th and 6th minutes to level the scores but a mix up in the back line a minute later allowed Liam Hennessy shoot to the Arva net. Mountnugent added 4 points in a row through Caffrey ( 8th & 12th min’s) Givney (9 min’s), and Gerard Barkey (13 min’s). Morris pulled one back for Arva in the 14th minute and we had numerous wide’s before Caffrey and Morris exchanged points in the 24th and 26th minutes to leave the half time score Mountnugent 1-8 Arva 0-5. The home side upped the tempo in the second half and recorded 6 points to the visitors 4 points but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
Givney pointed a free just after the restart and Conal Sheridan replied in the second minute. Barkey and Brian Ellis exchanged points in the 5th and 7th minutes while Givney pointed in the 10th minute. Morris had 2 points for Arva in the 13th and 18th minutes and Barkey had the visitors last score in the 21st minute. Morris had 2 Arva points in the 22nd and 30th minutes to close the scoring with the visitors still heading for promotion with one game to play. While Arva missed a few goal chances they were delighted with the form of their own goalie – Darragh Fox made a significant contribution on his comeback and hopefully we will see more of him next year.

Junior Championship SF: Shercock 0-10 Arva 0-9
Arva played Shercock in the Semi-Final replay of the Hotel Kilmore Junior Championship on Saturday evening last and after a tough hour’s football the sides were level again and extra time had to be played. While it was a better game than the first encounter there were still too many wide’s on both sides and Shercock just about deserved to get through. Arva were first on the scoreboard when Peter Morris pointed a free in the 7th minute but the sides were level 3 minutes later when Shercock had a similar score. Another free in the 16th minute put Shercock into the lead and they had a point from play in the 19th minute. Conal Sheridan reduced the deficit in the 21st minute but Shercock cancelled that in the 24th minute to leave them in front at the interval 0-4 to 0-2.
Arva attacked from the restart and Morris pointed after good work from Ciaran Brady and David Bouchier. The sides exchanged points in the 2nd and 4th minutes the latter from Dermot Mc Glade while Shercock pointed a free in the 7th minute. Morris pointed frees for Arva in the 15th and 21st minutes to level the scores at 0-6 each. Throughout the game both sides squandered many opportunities which was deeply frustrating for them. Extra time followed and in the first period Shercock took the lead with 3 points in the 2nd, 5th and 7th minutes while Arva responded with pointed frees from Morris in the 4th and 8th minutes. On the restart Shercock pointed a free in the 1st minute and Gavin Doyle pointed in the 8th minute to close the scoring and leave Shercock ahead by the minimum on a score of 0-10 to 0-9. The absence through injury of Shane Finnegan and Kevin Bouchier had a big effect on Arva and we wish both players a speedy recovery.
Arva Team: - John Kiernan, Stephen Ellis, Sean Mc Manus, Jonathan Mc Cabe, Ciaran Brady, Thomas Brady, Alan Barry, David Bouchier, James Morris, Brian Ellis, Fergal Mc Glade, Peter Morris (0-6, 5 frees), Raymond Daly, Dermot Mc Glade (0-1), Conal Sheridan (0-1).

Junior Championship: Arva 1-5 Shercock 1-5
Arva played Shercock in the Semi-Final of the Hotel Kilmore Junior Championship on Saturday evening last in Kingspan Breffni Park and after a poor encounter the sides finished level on a score of 1-5 each. Operating in the Division 2 League for the past number of years Shercock have a lot more experience than Arva and were hot favourites to advance to the final.
The Arva players never really got playing the type of football that they can and the loss of Kevin Bouchier just before half time coupled with some seriously bad refereeing decisions proved costly. There were a number of fouls leading up to the incident where Bouchier got hit and if any of them had been given this incident would not have occurred. He has to undergo an operation as the fracture is so bad and he will be out of football for the rest of the year. We wish his a speedy recovery. We also wish Stephen Ellis a speedy recover as he had to get 5 stitches in Cavan General Hospital following the game. Underfoot conditions were poor and we had to wait 10 minutes for the opening score when Peter Morris pointed a free for Arva with 20 minutes gone this was still the only score and then Shercock were awarded a penalty which Ollie Ward converted in the 21st minute and they added a point in the 27th minute. Arva replied with points from Raymond Daly in the 30th minute while Morris pointed a free in the 35th minute to leave Shercock ahead at the interval 1-1 to 0-3.
Arva attacked from the restart and Dermot Mc Glade had the ball in the net after 45 seconds to put them into the lead. Shercock replied with a point in the 2nd minute while Conal Sheridan cancelled that with a similar score in the 9th minute. Morris added another free in the 17th minute to put them 3 points ahead but Shercock shot 3 points to level matters with the last one in the 33rd minute just before the long whistle. Shercock will feel happier of the two teams going into the replay and their experience should give them the edge.
Arva Team: - John Kiernan, Stephen Ellis, Sean Mc Manus, Jonathan Mc Cabe, Ciaran Brady, Thomas Brady, Alan Barry, David Bouchier, James Morris, Brian Ellis, Dermot Mc Glade (1-0), Peter Morris (0-3 frees), Raymond Daly (0-1), Gavin Doyle, Kevin Bouchier.
Sub’s: - Conal Sheridan (0-1), Cian Sheridan, Philip Galligan, Paul Brady.

Kevin Bouchier pointed a free after he himself was fouled in the 19th minute and 4 minutes later Ronan Fitzpatrick brought off a great save from Raymond Daly after 23 minutes . It was a further 9 minutes until the next score when Daly made amends following a great inter-passing movement with Shane Finnegan providing the pass to Daly who sent an unstoppable shot to the net. Div 3 Reserve Arva 4-16 Redhills 4-12
Arva travelled to Redhills on Sunday morning last to play the home side in the Reserve League and came away with a great victory. It didn’t look that way in the first half as they struggled to come to terms with the game and at the interval Redhills held an 11 point lead – 4-8 to 1-6.
But after some tactical talk from Player Manager Raymond Brady at half time they were reinvigorated in the second half and won with 4 points to spare on a score Arva 4-16 Redhills 4-12. Not only did Arva score 3-10 in the second half they held Redhills to just 4 points and therein lay the reason for their victory. Every player put in a tremendous effort and it would be unfair to single out any individual as it was truly a team effort. To make matters worse for Arva at the start they only the 13 players needed to play the game and when one player got a slight hamstring injury he moved into full forward as there were no subs. Interestingly all the Arva forwards scored.
The other players who were eligible to play didn’t bother to travel or inform anyone that they would not be present. So to the following 13 players we say take a bow – you showed tremendous pride in your club and your jersey and to the others what can we say ??
Arva team and scorers – John Kiernan, Patrick Murtagh, Darren Gray, Paul Brady, Raymond Brady, Patrick Mulligan, Brian Fitzpatrick, Shane Mc Entee, Ciaran Brady (0-1), Peter Conneely (0-3), Dean Harrington (0-1), Raymond Daly (3-3), Jonathan Mc Cabe (1-8)

The winners got off to a great start and had 5 points on the board inside the opening 11 minutes – Peter Morris hit 3, Raymond Daly and Conal Sheridan one each.

Pictured Above: Arva's Peter Morris busting through.
Maghera pulled one back in the 13th minute but back came Arva with a goal from Gavin Doyle following a great break by Dermot Mc Glade in the 16th minute, Morris 0-3 and Mc Glade 0-1. The home side got a point in the 28th minute while James Morris cancelled that a minute later and they exchanged points again in the 33rd (Peter Morris free) and 34th minutes to leave the half time score Arva 1-11 Maghera 0-3.
Arva brought Gareth Lynch into goals and Ciaran Cooney into the full forward line at the start of the second half as they took up where they left off before the break and Ciaran Brady pointed in the 35th minute. The home side cancelled this a minute later as the ball hopped over the bar but Arva hit back with 2 points in the 39th minute from Ciaran Brady and Raymond Daly. Gareth Lynch was called into action and brought off a super save in the 44th minute and Maghera pointed in the 45nd minute. The sides exchanged points in the 48rd minute with Mc Glade on target for Arva. They exchanged points again in the 49th and 50th minutes with Jonathan Mc Cabe on target on this occasion. Div 3 Arva 2-7 Munterconnacht 3-14
Arva travelled to Ryefield on Wednesday evening last to play Munterconnacht in the Division 3 League where they were comprehensively defeated on a score of 3-14 to 2-7. This was one of those occasions when everything went right for the home side as everything they touched “turned to Gold”. Points were scored from way out the field and from difficult angles as Munterconnacht took the spoils.

Pictured Above: Arva's Ciaran Brady in defense.
After many wide’s from both sides Peter Morris opened the scoring with a pointed free for Arva but the home side hit hard with 2 goals and a point within 2 minutes. Points were exchanged in the 17th and 19th minutes with Morris on target from a free. Morris then hit a good point from play in the 22nd minute but the home side cancelled that one in the 26th minute. As Arva tried to claw back the lead Gavin Doyle sent a great shot to the net to leave just a goal between the sides.
Points were again exchanged before the interval with Morris pointing a free to leave the half time score 2-4 to 1-4. From the restart Arva attacked and Gavin Doyle pointed inside 30 seconds but the visitors were flattering to deceive as the home side shot 1-6 without reply between the 5th and 17th minutes. The goal came from what was a very dubious penalty but when your luck is out these things happen. Arva upped the ante again and were rewarded when Dermot mc Glade scored a great goal and Morris followed with 2 pointed frees in the 18th, 19th and 22nd minutes but that was as good as it got as the home side recorded 4 more points to emerge worthy winners.
Arva – John Kiernan, Shane Finnegan , Sean Mc Manus, Alan Barry, Stephen Ellis, Thomas Brady, James Morris, David Bouchier, Cian Sheridan, Jonathan Mc Cabe , Dermot Mc Glade (1-0), Peter Morris (0-6), Raymond Daly, Gavin Doyle (1-1), Conal Sheridan.
