Junior Championship Arva 2-08 Swanlinbar 4-10
Arva were defeated by Swanlinbar in the quarter final of the Hotel Kilmore Junior Championship on Sunday last in the First Ulsters Park, Ballyconnell on a score line Swanlinbar 4-10 Arva 2-8. This was a game both sides will want to forget for different reasons – Arva for giving away 3 slack goals from which they could not hope to recover. This is a young Arva team and if they learn from this game it will stand to them in the future.

Peter Morris had the opening scores for Arva with 2 points in as many minutes but Swad hit back with 3 points in the 4th (free), 5th and 7th minutes to take the lead. Morris levelled matters in the 9th minute from a free but Swad replied 2 minutes later to lead once more. In the 13th minute Gavin Doyle was heading for Goal when he was held and from the resultant penalty Shane Bouchier made no mistake to put Arva 2 points ahead. It was just seconds later that Swad had a player Red Carded and as so often happens they upped their game and in the 16th minute they scored a great goal to put them ahead once more and they led from there to the finish. A pointed free (18 mins) and a pointed “45” (19 mins) pushed them further ahead, Morris was on target for Arva in the 20th minute while Swad pointed another “45” a minute later. Gavin Doyle punched a great point (23 mins) and Thomas Brady pointed (25th min) to leave a point between the sides. The winners pointed another free (27 mins) but disaster struck just before half time when a pass out of the Arva defence was intercepted and sent to the net to leave the half time score Swanlinbar 2-8 Arva 1-6.
If the first half ended badly for Arva the start of the second half was a disaster. A high ball into the Arva goalmouth sailed over the fingers of the backs and into the net in the second minute. Thomas Brady ( 3 mins) & Alan Barry ( 4 mins) left 2 goals between them but in the 6th minute a free for Swad sailed into the Arva net just like the previous one. In fairness to the Arva players they did not lie down and were rewarded with a goal from Thomas Brady a minute later. That was as good as it got for Arva and they failed to score from there to the finish. Swanlinbar got 2 more points in the 9th(free) & 15th minutes and for the final quarter there was no score as the game turned into a niggling affair with 2 Arva players sent off after they were caught retaliating.
Arva Team – Darragh Fox, Shane Bouchier (1-0), Dermot Mc Glade, Philip Galligan, Stephen Ellis, Fergal Brady, Conor Mc Entee, Fergal Mc Glade, James Morris, David Bouchier (Capt), Alan Barry (0-1), Brian Ellis, Thomas Brady (1-2), Peter Morris (0-4), Gavin Doyle (0-1).
