With a stiff breeze blowing down the field the home side only registered a single point in the first half – although they did register at least 7 wide’s – while the visitors hit 4 points. In the second half Arva recorded 6 points while Ballymachugh got 3 points.
Again Arva had too many wide’s both from frees and play in the second half and along with some bad passing denied them victory. Ciaran Brady was the scorer in the first half with Brian Ellis, Peter Morris 0-2, and Kevin Bouchier 0-3 scoring in the second.
Arva team – John Kiernan, Stephen Ellis, Sean Mc Manus, Shane Finnegan, Thomas Brady, James Morris, Ciaran Brady, Dermot Mc Glade, Cian Sheridan, Conal Sheridan, Peter Morris, Brian Ellis, Jonathan Mc Cabe, Kevin Bouchier, Paul Brady.
Subs – Conor Mc Entee, Bryan Mc Entee, Sean Donnelly.
The home side weren’t helped by the loss thru injury of full back Sean Mc Manus early in the game while his replacement Conor Mc Entee was stretchered off also in the first half which lasted for 44 minutes. Both injuries were totally accidental as both sides suffered numerous other injuries over the hour. Last week Arva also lost Fergal Mc Glade thru injury and we wish all players a speedy recovery.

Arva Local Notes - 7th May

St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club: Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night 30 th April. The Cavan U-21 team were defeated by Roscommon on Saturday last in Pearse Park, Longford on a score 2-7 to 2-2 in the All Ireland semi-final. Cavan supporters were irate with a number of refereeing decisions and especially when he chickened out of giving a Penalty after a Cavan player was deliberately fouled in the square. He was very inconsistent all through and most of his bad decisions effected Cavan. However we congratulate the team and management for all the thrills they gave us inthe Ulster championship and we look forward to seeing more of these players in the Cavan jersey in the years ahead.

The Cavan U-21 team had a fantastic victory over Tyrone in the Ulster Championship Final in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. Three Ulster U-21 Finals in a row and 2 wins over Tyrone – must be doing something right. Cavan led from the start and Tyrone were playing catch up all through. As supporters waited and waited for the inevitable Tyrone take over the Cavan players never gave up and were worthy winners. The area was saddened by the death of M.s Kathleen Brennan, Main Street, Arva which occurred at the College View Nursing Home, Cavan following a long illness. She was a member of an old and much respected Arva family and ran a successful business in the town for many years before her retirement. Kathleen enjoyed nothing better than a good walk and was a regular on the road around the area. She was a deeply religious person and for years she looked after the flowers in the Sacred Heart Church, Arva. She had a great affinity with the less well off and she helped out many people discreetly over the years. She was of a very friendly disposition and had a welcome for everyone. Kathleen was predeceased by her brother Dr Tom Brennan, sister Mrs Mary Jo Doherty and is survived by her sister Sr Vera, St Louis Convent, Monaghan, brother Liam nephews, nieces and a large circle of friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. Her remains were removed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and following Requiem Mass burial took place in Coronea Cemetery.
Congratulations are extended to Mrs Rose Smith, Drumury, Moyne who appeared on Winning Streak on Saturday night last on RTE 1 television. Rose was very successful and we wish her good health to enjoy her winnings.

Congratulations to Ciaran Mullooly and John Donlon who were jointly awarded Longford Person of the Year at a gala event in Dublin on Saturday night last. Ciaran is a regular visitor to Arva while John lived in Arva for some time. We understand that a great night was had by all present.

Cavan played Antrim in Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday last where they were defeated by 4-5 to 0-12 but thankfully Tipperary beat Offaly so Cavan stay in Division 3 for next season. Cavan supporters were unhappy with the style of play and the fact that conceded 4 goals and a big improvement is needed if they are to have a look in against Donegal in the Ulster Championship.
The Cavan U-21 team will play Derry in the Semi Final of the Ulster Championship tonight Wednesday 4 th April in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. The customers in Bank of Ireland, Arva were saddened recently by the transfer of M.s Edel Quinn from Arva to the Cootehill Branch. The area was saddened by the death of Mrs Anne Brady , Virginia which occurred recently. She was a member of the very popular Gormley family from Cormore, Arva. She trained as a Nurse in Monaghan but after some years she left that and went to work in Dublin and it was in those years she met and married Terry Brady from Laragh. Upon his appointment as Creamery Manager in Crosskeys in the late ‘50’s they made their home there and became prominent members of that community. Ann worked in the Creamery store which was a focal point in the area and she and Terry immersed themselves in the life of the area. Anne was a founder member of the local apostolic Society and the I.C.A. and her generosity was unbounded. Sadly for Anne her beloved husband Terry passed away in 1979 and in 1995 she moved to live in Virginia. Her remains were removed to St Mathews Church, Crosskeys and she was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Anne was predeceased by her husband Terry, sister Bridget, brother Jim and is survived by her son Brendan, daughter Annette, brothers Edward (Ned) in Cormore, Tom in Gowna, sister Margaret O’ Reilly, Main Street, Arva to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.
Congratulations are extended to M.s Ashling Cartwright, Drumalt, Arva and Mr Jonathan Dewart, Cornagran, Lough Gowna who were married in Gowna Parish Church recently followed by a Reception for family and friends in Lough Rynn Castle Hotel, Mohill. We wish them every happiness in the future
Congratulations are extended to Mrs Rose Smith, Drumury, Moyne who will be a competitor on Winning Streak on this Saturday night 14 th April on RTE 1 television.
